TMJ and Jaw Pain Relief in Montclair and Whippany, NJ
Your jaw clicks when you eat. It aches when you wake up. Maybe it catches or locks when you yawn, or you get headaches that start at your temples. If that sounds familiar, you may be dealing with a TMJ problem, and you are far from alone.
The good news: most jaw pain isn't a jaw problem alone. It is usually a mix of muscle tension, neck and posture strain, and daily habits. When we look at all of it together, many people get real relief without surgery or drugs.
What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the hinge just in front of each ear that connects your jaw to your skull. You use it every time you talk, chew, swallow or yawn. When the joint or the muscles around it are irritated, that is called a temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. Most people just call it TMJ.
Common signs of a TMJ problem
- Clicking, popping or grinding when you open or close your mouth
- Jaw pain or tightness, especially in the morning
- A jaw that catches, locks or won't open all the way
- Headaches at the temples or behind the eyes
- Ear pain, fullness or ringing with no ear infection
- Neck and shoulder tension that won't let go
- Clenching or grinding your teeth, day or night
Why your jaw and neck are connected
Your jaw doesn't work alone. The muscles that move it are tied into the muscles of your neck and upper back. When your head drifts forward over a phone or a desk, those neck muscles tighten, and the jaw muscles have to work harder to hold everything in place. That is why so many TMJ patients also have neck pain, and why treating only the jaw often doesn't hold. We don't guess, we test: we look at how your jaw opens, how your neck moves, and how you sit and stand before we decide what to do.
Common causes of TMJ pain
- Clenching and grinding, often from stress or poor sleep
- Forward head posture from screens, desks and driving
- Old injuries to the jaw, head or neck, including whiplash
- Tight chewing muscles from gum, hard foods or one-sided chewing
- Bite and dental changes, which is why we work with your dentist when needed
- Inflammation, which diet and lifestyle can make better or worse
How we help TMJ at Carlucci Chiropractic & Wellness
With 30 years in practice, Dr. Kimberly Carlucci, DC, ICCSP, looks at the whole picture, not just the sore spot. Care is built around you and may include:
- A full exam of your jaw movement, neck, upper back and posture
- Gentle chiropractic adjustments to the neck and upper back to take strain off the jaw
- Soft tissue work on the chewing muscles, neck and shoulders
- Gua sha to release tight tissue around the jaw and neck
- At-home jaw and posture exercises you can do in a few minutes a day
- Nutrition and inflammation support from a functional medicine view, because sometimes the problem isn't the joint, it's the fuel
If your exam points to a dental or bite issue, we'll tell you and coordinate with your dentist so you get the right care.
Simple things you can try today
- Rest your jaw: lips together, teeth apart, tongue resting on the roof of your mouth.
- Skip gum and very chewy or hard foods for a week.
- Check your screen height so your head isn't drifting forward.
- Notice when you clench during the day, and let go.
- Try a warm compress on the jaw muscles for 10 minutes before bed.
When to get checked right away
See a doctor or dentist promptly if your jaw is locked shut or open, if you have facial swelling or fever, if the pain started after a fall or blow to the face, or if you have numbness in your face. Jaw pain that comes with chest pain, shortness of breath or pain with exertion can be a heart warning sign. Call 911.
Frequently asked questions
Can a chiropractor help TMJ?
Many TMJ cases involve neck strain, posture and tight muscles, which is exactly what chiropractic care addresses. Your exam will show whether this approach fits your case.
Do you adjust the jaw itself?
We start with gentle work on the neck, upper back and jaw muscles. Any jaw work is gentle and only done when your exam supports it.
How long until I feel better?
It depends on how long you've had it and what's driving it. Many people notice a change within the first few visits. We'll give you a clear plan after your exam.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly.
Do you take insurance?
We are an out-of-network practice. We can give you the paperwork to submit to your plan for possible reimbursement.
